Become the Master of Your IQ Designer!

What you will learn:

This will be a 3 session (3 hours each) class starting from picking out your fabric, designing your quilt top, designing your very own quilting design in the IQ designer, then quilting each block in the hoop using your embroidery machine, and finally, squaring up and binding your quilt.  And yes, there will probably be homework, depending on how fast you create and sew.

Session 1:   You will be designing, then cutting using the Creative Grids Crazy 8 ruler set, and then sewing your squares and eventually your entire quilt top.  You can decide whether you want to use scrap fabric, a layer cake, or yardage.  If you have an idea before class on your color/fabric scheme, then come ready to cut and sew.  If you want to explore different ways to use the rulers to get different outcomes, you can come, design, then go shopping at our shop, and finally cut and sew.   Your entire quilt top will need to be completed before the 2nd session.  You only need a regular sewing machine for this session.  If you only have a combo machine, you do not need to bring the embroidery unit to this session.

Session 2:  Come with your quilt sandwich ready to go.  You can have it basted using spray or pins, or you can use my new favorite batting, Hobbs 80/20 fusible (we have rolls in stock!), which fuses with an iron (the fusing washes out, this is NOT the same as the fusible batting and fleece you use in purses and bags).   You will then proceed to decide on a design for your quilting.  You will be quilting each square individually; you will not be doing an edge-to-edge quilting. Bring some paper and pencil to draw out your design, then you will go to your IQ designer and design what you have drawn, either by scanning in your drawing, or by using the built-in shapes (my favorite way).  Once you have designed and done a sample sew to make sure of the stitching and size, you will begin to quilt your quilt.  You will need your embroidery machine, with its unit and hoops, in this session.

Session 3:  With your quilt completely quilted, you will square up your quilt, trim off the excess batting and backing, then determine the width of binding you want.  You will then cut your binding, sew the strips together, and bind your quilt. I will show you my method, but you are free to chose another if you like. You will only need a sewing machine for this session.  If you only have a combo machine, you do not need to bring the embroidery unit to this session.

With 3 longer sessions, I am hoping everyone will have enough time to complete their quilt.  Bring water and snacks, and be ready for some fun sewing and conversations!
