The Challenge:

To use jelly roll (2.5-inch) strips in a project. Any sewing or craft project is acceptable. Your item can be a quilt, wall hanging, purse, tote, home décor, apron, coat, rug, whatever you can dream up.  You will then bring it to club and show it off, giving a description of the techniques you used to create your design. If you would like to demonstrate a particular technique, we will have the Solaris and the Triumph at your disposal. Also, if you cannot make it to club that day, drop it off earlier with your name and a description of the techniques you used.  We will then number the items, display them in the shop and post them on social media for our customers to vote on their favorites for the next week (yes, this is going to be very difficult with all the talented people we have!).  After the voting period has ended, we will then announce the winner.

Freaquently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Rules:

  • Does it need to be a purchased jelly roll? No, you can use precut or cut your own.
  • Do you need to leave the strips the length they are cut? No, you can sew them and cut them however needed to create your project.
  • Do I need to use the entire jelly roll? No, just enough so we know that 2.5-inch strips were used (in other words, just don’t put one strip in your item).
  • Do the strips need to be the main focus? No, you can use them as a lining to a jacket or purse for example, you just need to use some strips in the project.
  • Do they need to be 100% cotton? No, if you want to use silk, wool, rayon, linin, etc.  that would be fine, as long as they are 2.5-inch strips.
  • Do they need to be sewn? No, you could braid them into a rug if you want.
  • Can I embellish them? Of course! Sewn embroidery, hooped embroidery, decorative threads or bling of any kind is encouraged!
  • Do I have to demonstrate my technique? No, we won’t make anyone try to sew in front of a group, but it would be nice if you could explain what you did so we can all learn something new. If you do not want to talk about your techniques in front of the group, just write them up and Gail will read what you wrote.
