Serger T-Shirt using the Knit Woven/Binder Foot

Class is September 16th from 12 noon to 3pm
Last day to sign up is September 12th

What You Will Learn:

In this serger/cover stitch class you will learn the basics of the knit woven binder as you create a stylish and flattering knit top.  Due to limited space and the need to be socially distant, you will need to cut out your shirt at home.  For the neck binding, just cut out strips the width needed for your binder. If you want to bind the sleeves also, cut out enough strips for the hems of your sleeves.   You will need extra strips to set up the binder and run some sample bindings before you sew them onto your top.  Please be in the classroom 15 minutes early to set up and be ready to go.  You will be serging first, so have your combo machine set up for a 4 thread overlock stitch.

What you need to bring (Supply List):

  • Serger/cover stitch combo machine or a serger and cover stitch machine in good working order.  You must know how to use your machines.
  • Knit/woven binder, double or single fold.  Any width you desire.
  • Cover stitch table and serger knife cover, and screws to attach the binder
  • Serger manual and tools that came with your machine
  • The Perfect T-Shirt pattern by Pamela’s Patterns, Concord T-Shirt pattern by Cashmerette,   Women’s t-shirts by Jalie, or the Dolman top by Jalie.  All can be purchased at Berger’s, but there are limited quantities.   Any other T-shirt pattern you may have.
  • Good quality knit fabric, WITH NO NAP please.  The amount depends on the pattern and size you choose.   Washed and dried to remove shrinkage.   Please bring all your extra for sample sewing.
  • Serger Cone thread (can purchase at Berger’s), blending or matching color.  If blending, you will need 2 cones and 2 matching sewing spools of thread for the needles.  If matching, you will need 4 cones. Aeroflock thread is great for the loopers when working with knits.
  • New serger needles, stretch serger needles are best for this class, but not necessary.
  • Small ruler/seam gauge
  • Straight pins or clips
  • Basting glue (optional, but might come in handy)
  • Small sharp scissors or thread snips
  • Good sewing tweezers
  • Paper and pencil for notes
  • Any other sewing notion you normally use while sewing (such as glasses)
