LAST DAY TO PUT IN AN ORDER NOVEMBER 16TH, LAST DAY TO SIGN UP NOVEMBER 20TH.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

The boxy tote is a wonderful tote with lots of pockets, a zipper to keep all your things secure, and stays to keep it wide open to find what you need.  It works great as an overnight bag, sewing tool tote, Singer Featherweight carrier, and anything else you can think of.  Since I have sewn a few of these, I have made changes to both the cutting and construction directions to make it (at least in my opinion) easier and more streamline to construct without compromising on stability.  When you sign up and pick up your pattern at the store, you will be given the new cutting directions.   In class you will receive the construction modifications.

YOUR SUPPLY LIST (WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING):

BEFORE class you will need to cut out all your pieces (remember to keep them labeled, I use small sticky notes) and fused to the appropriate foam/batting/interfacing otherwise you will never be able to complete the tote in the time allotted.

Supply list (everything can be purchased at Berger’s Sewing and Vacuum):

The Boxy Tote pattern #ps056 designed by Penny Sturges, this includes the stays (pick up at Berger’s along with the new cutting instructions)

You can swap fabric amounts and pieces as you like, here is what the pattern calls for:

  • Fabric A – 1 yd-outer end pockets, handle, outer bag front and back
  • Fabric B- 1 1/3 yd- outer ends, inner bag ends, outer bag front and back pocket, inner front and back.   This is the fabric that is the most noticeable, so make it your favorite for the front and back pockets!
  • Fabric C- 1 yd- inner end pockets, inner front and back pockets, outer bag end pocket linings, outer bag front and back pocket linings.

Fusible interfacing-1 yd of 20 inches wide  (order BOS428 from Berger’s, $6.40.   ORDER EARLY)

Fusible batting- 1 yard 45” wide (order BOS426LF thru Berger’s, $15.03.  ORDER EARLY)

Single sided fusible Foam- 1 yard 58” wide (order BOS495S-36 thru Berger’s, $21.68.  ORDER EARLY)

Some sort of Craf-tex type firm stabilizer for the bottom. (BOS437, or BOS437F-20, call for pricing and availability) The Babylock version is available in the store, by the stabilizers.

30-inch Heavy duty Zipper, I used the double pull zippers.  You could use a 24-inch (or longer) separating zipper if wanted.  Berger’s has a good selection of the double pull zippers, and some separating zippers.

12 inch (minimum) coiled zipper for the bottom lining, OPTIONAL, but is nice to be able to get in and out of the bottom (and makes a nice hidey hole…)

Sewing machine in GOOD working order

Feet for sewing in zippers, stitching on the edge, in the ditch, and quilting (either sewn or free-motion).

New needles, Universal 80 or 90 is fine

Fabric marking pens

Long pins and/or Wonder Clips

Good quality thread

Seam gauges and tape measures

Sharp scissors

Any other sewing notion you usually use (like glasses and seam rippers)
